Mining Wastewater Treatment Plant
Wastewater Quality Characteristics
The large formal mines and artisanal/small-scale mines (ASM), including high-sulfide mines (copper-cobalt, gold mines), and special uranium/lithium/bauxite mineral resources.
The wastewater has eight core characteristics: widespread strongly acidic acid mine drainage (AMD), extremely high heavy metal concentrations, ultra-high suspended solids, unique pollutants such as mineral flotation reagents, mercury and cyanide, drastic seasonal fluctuations, high salinity and high sulfate content, radioactive risks, and inadequate supporting treatment facilities. Properties vary greatly among different mineral types.
(1) Sulfide metal mines (copper, cobalt, lead-zinc, gold): Typically strongly acidic with pH 2.5–4.5; pyrite oxidation continuously generates acid.
(2) Cyanide gold leaching wastewater: Alkaline with pH 9.5–11, containing stable free cyanide.
(3) Bauxite, iron ore and lithium mines: Near-neutral to weakly acidic (pH 5.5–7.8) with weak acid generation, yet prominent heavy metals, fluorides and lithium ions.
(4) In rainy seasons, tailings washed by surface runoff discharge massive acid wastewater in a concentrated manner; in dry seasons, water evaporation concentrates wastewater, doubling salinity and heavy metal concentrations.
(5) Ultra-high suspended solids (SS) and turbidity, high sulfate, high total dissolved solids (TDS) and high conductivity with strong corrosivity.
Typical Treatment Process

Technical Features
(1) Lime neutralization removes heavy metals including Cu, Co, Zn, Cd, Mn, As, with low operating costs.
(2) Additional aeration oxidation process effectively precipitates ferrous iron.
(3) For mines with high-concentration AMD and extremely high copper & cobalt content, two-stage neutralization and precipitation is adopted to improve heavy metal removal efficiency and cut operating expenses.
(4) Small skid-mounted neutralization and precipitation units are available for small artisanal mines, featuring low investment and mobility.
(5) For remote mines without power supply, unpowered multi-stage sedimentation tanks and limestone filter dams are applied to neutralize acidity naturally, with nearly zero chemical reagent cost.
