Ice Cream Wastewater Treatment Plant

Wastewater Quality Characteristics

Wastewater mainly originates from CIP (Clean-in-Place) on-site cleaning wastewater (accounting for over 60% and serving as the core high-concentration wastewater), floor and mold flushing wastewater, spillage and overflow cooling water, workshop disinfection flushing water, etc.

It contains large amounts of residual cream, milk powder, sugar, chocolate, emulsifiers, protein, cocoa powder, fruit pulp residues, food colorants and other substances, classified as high-concentration organic wastewater.

(1) Suspended COD accounts for 40%~85% of total COD; suspended solids and grease act as the main carriers of COD.

(2) Coexistence of floating oil and emulsified oil easily forms thick scum on tank surfaces and clogs fillers and pipelines.

(3) The C/N/P ratio is suitable for biochemical treatment, yet total nitrogen and total phosphorus contents are relatively high, so nitrogen and phosphorus removal must be considered in the advanced treatment stage.

(4) The wastewater appears milky white, pink or tan, and complete decolorization cannot be achieved solely through biochemical treatment.

(5) Dramatic fluctuations occur in water volume and water quality across seasons and production shifts.

Technical Features

(1) Separate pipelines collect CIP acid washing and alkaline washing wastewater, which is neutralized before entering the aerated equalization tank to prevent severe shock loads to the biochemical system.

(2) The pretreatment combines inclined plate oil separation and DAF air flotation to cut chemical costs while thoroughly removing emulsified cream fat and protein colloids.

(3) The hydrolysis acidification section largely decomposes long-chain grease, improves biodegradability and prevents excessive foaming in aerobic tanks.

(4) The combined anaerobic-aerobic process is adopted for high-concentration wastewater to recover partial energy via biogas.
