Wastewater Quality Characteristics
Palm oil wastewater mainly falls into three categories: fruit bunch sterilization condensate, pressed palm fiber centrifugal wastewater and refining washing wastewater. Pressed wastewater accounts for 70% of the total water volume and carries the highest pollution load Refining wastewater is weakly alkaline with a low pollution load. Its key characteristics are as follows:
(1) Primary pollutants consist of water-soluble sugars, organic acids, pectin and starch. The BOD₅/COD ratio ranges from 0.45 to 0.6, indicating excellent biodegradability and high biogas yield under anaerobic conditions.
(2) High concentrations of organic acids and fatty acids render the wastewater acidic. Alkali dosing is required to adjust the pH to 6.5–7.5 before biochemical treatment.
(3) High oil content including free floating oil and emulsified oil. Oil films hinder oxygen supply in biochemical systems and clog fillers and pipelines.
(4) High suspended solids (SS) comprising palm crude fiber, pulp residues and pectin, which settle rapidly and easily block pumps.
(5) High colority caused by carotene, tannins and lignin and color removal is difficult.
Treatment Process
Technical Features
(1) Extremely high organic load and high calorific value enable massive biogas recovery, with a biogas output of 25–35Nm³ per ton of wastewater.
(2) Free oil skimming recovers crude palm oil as a by-product. Combined bar screen and cyclone deslagging produce solid residues that can be mixed with coal for combustion or processed into organic fertilizer.
(3) Waste heat heat exchange preheats process water to lower energy consumption.
(4) Coagulation removes soluble colloids, residual oil and chromatic substances, achieving an additional 30%–45% COD reduction.
