Cassava Ethanol Wastewater Treatment Plant
Wastewater Quality Characteristics
Producing 1 ton of finished ethanol from cassava generates 12 to 15 tons of wastewater, which falls into three categories: ultra-high-concentration distillation stillage (major pollution source), medium-concentration cleaning wastewater and low-concentration cooling wastewater.
(1) Extremely high suspended solids (SS) and fibrous colloids. Crude cassava fiber cannot be utilized by yeast, resulting in high viscosity of wastewater. Direct feeding into anaerobic tanks will easily block water distributors and three-phase separators.
(2) Massive lactic acid produced during natural fermentation leads to raw wastewater pH below 4 with strong acidity. Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) tend to accumulate and inhibit methanogens.
(3) BOD₅/COD ratio exceeds 0.5, showing excellent biodegradability with inherent sufficient nitrogen and phosphorus.
(4) Cassava contains cyanogenic glycosides, which decompose into trace cyanide ions (CN⁻) in fermentation. Cyanide can be degraded under anaerobic conditions, so independent cyanide breaking treatment is unnecessary.
(5) Waste stillage waste heat at 80°C can be recovered to maintain anaerobic reactor temperature (mesophilic 35°C / thermophilic 55°C), greatly cutting fuel consumption for boiler heating.
Typical Treatment Process

Technical Advantages
(1) Two optional anaerobic processes: clear liquid anaerobic treatment and whole stillage anaerobic treatment.
(2) For clear liquid anaerobic process, plate-and-frame filter press is adopted for solid-liquid separation in pretreatment. Dry filter residues can be processed into organic fertilizer or biomass fuel.
(3) Whole stillage direct anaerobic treatment eliminates filter pressing procedures, lowering capital investment and chemical reagent costs.
(4) A large volume of biogas is recovered through anaerobic fermentation, which can be directly used for boiler heating and power generation to offset the plant’s steam and electricity expenses.
(5) This process is also applicable to corn starch alcohol wastewater treatment.
