Wastewater Quality Characteristics
In sugarcane sugar production, 8–21 cubic meters of wastewater is generated per ton of finished sugar.
High-concentration organic wastewater mainly includes mill chute wastewater, cane washing water, clarification & filter washing water, and molasses distillation wastewater. Additional wastewater sources cover equipment cleaning, workshop floor flushing, and blowdown from circulating cooling water systems.
(1) Extremely high biodegradability with BOD/COD ratio of approximately 0.5–0.7; the wastewater is readily biodegradable, making it ideal for combined anaerobic-aerobic treatment processes.
(2) High sugar content and strong coloration from caramel and polyphenolic pigments; standalone biochemical treatment cannot achieve complete decolorization.
(3) Highly seasonal production pattern: sugar mills only operate during the crushing season, with minimal wastewater flow in the off-crushing season.
(4) Prone to rapid acidification: fast hydrolysis of sugars produces organic acids, dropping pH sharply to 4–5 and inhibiting microbial activity.

Technical Advantages
(1) The pretreatment section adopts sand removal combined with dissolved air flotation to remove bagasse, silt, floating oil and colloidal pollutants.
(2) The anaerobic process produces methane-rich biogas, which can be supplied to boilers for heating or power generation. Energy recovery effectively cuts operational costs.
(3) Anaerobic effluent flows into the A/O oxic reactor to simultaneously remove organic matter, ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen.
(4) Advanced tertiary treatment is customized to match different discharge standards, delivering optimized capital investment and operating expenses.
