Fresh Milk Wastewater Treatment Plant
Wastewater Quality Characteristics
Wastewater from fresh milk processing plants mainly comes from defective milk, concentrated CIP cleaning liquid (stored in independent tanks), pre-rinsing of tanks, filling line rinsing water, floor washing water, circulating cooling water, concentrated water produced by pure water preparation, boiler drainage and so on.
Its COD value is much lower than whey wastewater. The natural pH of the wastewater is close to neutral, the C/N ratio of milk wastewater is low (10~15:1), and the chloride ion content is low, so there will be no high-salinity inhibition to nitrification.
(1) Lactose in wastewater can be easily converted into lactic acid by hydrolytic bacteria. Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) will quickly accumulate to over 500 mg/L and directly inhibit methanogens.
(2) Grease exists in nano-emulsified state and cannot be removed by natural sedimentation. It is easy to wrap granular sludge and block three-phase separators.
(3) The wastewater discharge load during morning milking and centralized equipment cleaning periods is 5 to 10 times that of the night shutdown period, which is likely to bring impact load to the whole treatment system.
(4) Strong acid and strong alkali are discharged alternately during daytime CIP cleaning, causing violent pH fluctuation.

Technical Features
(1) Waste milk, concentrated CIP alkaline and acid cleaning liquid are stored in sealed tanks, and metering pumps are used for micro-dosing feeding to completely avoid instantaneous impact load.
(2) Methane biogas generated by anaerobic treatment can be delivered to boilers for heating or power generation, realizing energy recovery and cutting down operation costs.
(3) The effluent from anaerobic tank enters the A/O aerobic biochemical tank to simultaneously remove organic pollutants, ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen.
(4) Polymeric aluminum sulfate or iron salt is added to precipitate residual phosphate in water, ensuring that total phosphorus (TP) of discharged water meets discharge standards.
