Shea Butter Wastewater Treatment Plant
Wastewater Quality Characteristics
(1) Main Wastewater Sources
1. Raw Material Washing & Dehulling Wastewater: Water generated from washing shea kernels, containing sediment, fruit peels, fibers and pectin.
2. Extraction & Pressing Wastewater: Aqueous phase after boiling, steaming and mechanical pressing separation, loaded with large amounts of shea butter, emulsified oil, colloids, protein and polysaccharides.
3. Refining Process Wastewater: Wash water from degumming, deacidification (alkali refining), decolorization and deodorization procedures, containing soapstock, free fatty acids (FFA), phospholipids, activated bleaching earth and trace solvents.
4. Equipment & Floor Washing Wastewater: Containing residual grease, pulp debris and cleaning agents (acids, alkalis, surfactants).
(2) Wastewater Quality Features
1. High oil content with strong emulsification. Soapstock (sodium fatty acid) and residual surfactants form highly stable emulsions that cannot be separated by conventional sedimentation.
2. High COD concentration. Long-chain fatty acids (stearic acid, oleic acid, etc.) degrade slowly and tend to accumulate in biochemical systems, triggering sludge bulking.
3. High suspended solids (SS) with abundant fine fibers and colloids, resulting in high viscosity and poor settling performance.
4. Natural polyphenol pigments cause high colority, which is hard to remove and impairs effluent appearance while increasing ecological toxicity.
Typical Treatment Process

Technical Advantages
(1)Targeting the challenges of heavy emulsification, refractory long-chain fatty acids and bacteriostatic polyphenols, the pretreatment adopts an enhanced process of acid precipitation + oil separation + air flotation to prevent high-concentration emulsified oil from directly entering biochemical units.
(2) Composite inorganic demulsifiers break stable oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions formed by natural saponins and soapstock, converting emulsified oil into floating oil and flocs for massive grease separation.
(3) Hydrolyze long-chain fatty acids, polysaccharides and macromolecular organics to improve biodegradability and eliminate bacteriostatic polyphenolic substances.
(4) Advanced treatment removes residual refractory organics and achieves complete decolorization.
