Common Structures and Types of Stand-Alone Biogas Digesters

A stand-alone biogas digester is an anaerobic fermentation unit built in a farmer’s yard or on the premises of a livestock farm that operates independently. It is used to treat human and animal manure as well as organic waste, and to recover biogas as an energy source.

Basic Components

A complete stand-alone biogas digester typically consists of an inlet, a fermentation chamber, an outlet, and a gas outlet pipe. The fermentation chamber is the core unit, where organic matter is broken down by anaerobic microorganisms to produce combustible gas composed primarily of methane.

Main Types

Based on structural design and gas storage methods, standalone biogas digesters are primarily classified into the following types:

Hydrostatic-pressure biogas digester: A widely used type in which fermentation and gas storage occur in the same chamber, utilizing the hydraulic pressure difference of the feedstock to extract biogas. Suitable for ecological agriculture models such as the “Four-in-One” approach.

Floating-Dome Biogas Digester: The gas storage chamber is located separately above the fermentation tank, and a floating dome is used to collect biogas. Gas production and utilization are relatively stable and less affected by fluctuations in the liquid level of the fermentation tank.

Semi-Plastic Biogas Digester: The digester body is a concrete structure, with a red clay plastic dome serving as the gas storage cover. The structure is relatively simple, and construction costs are lower.

Prefabricated Biogas Digesters: Molded from materials such as fiberglass-reinforced plastic, these units are prefabricated in a factory and installed on-site. Construction time is short, and quality is controllable.

The selection of a standalone biogas digester must be determined comprehensively based on factors such as local climate, geological conditions, and feedstock sources. The national standard “Design Specifications for Household Biogas Digesters” (GB/T 4750-2016) provides the technical basis for digester design.
