Flexible Deployment: Typical Applications of Open Biogas Flares

Open biogas flares are primarily used in various facilities that generate biogas, serving as combustion and emission equipment for excess biogas or during emergency conditions.
Open biogas flares are primarily used in various facilities that generate biogas, serving as combustion and emission equipment for excess biogas or during emergency conditions.
Main Application Areas
Depending on actual operating conditions, biogas flares can be classified into various types, including flaming flares, flameless flares, enclosed ground-mounted flares, semi-enclosed flares, and open flares. Open flares are widely used in the following scenarios:
Wastewater Treatment Plants: The anaerobic digestion process generates large amounts of biogas. During system startup, equipment maintenance, or when biogas utilization systems are shut down, excess gas must be safely burned off via a flare.
Livestock Farms and Agricultural Projects: Biogas produced by the anaerobic fermentation of livestock and poultry manure is vented through a flare when gas production fluctuates or gas-consuming equipment malfunctions.
Landfills: After landfill gas is collected, it is burned when it cannot be utilized or when utilization facilities are undergoing maintenance.
Food and Pharmaceutical Industries: Biogas generated from the anaerobic treatment of organic wastewater produced during production processes at breweries, food processing plants, pharmaceutical factories, and distilleries.
Comparison of Open and Enclosed Systems
Based on the location of the combustion flame, biogas flares are classified into two types: open (external combustion) and enclosed (internal combustion). In an open flare, the combustion flame is exposed to the outside environment, and a visible flame can be seen from the outside. In an enclosed flare, combustion takes place within a fully enclosed combustion chamber, and the flame is not visible.
In terms of performance characteristics, each type has its own strengths:
Open-flame torches: These feature a simple structure, relatively low cost, and easy installation and maintenance, making them suitable for scenarios with limited budgets or where combustion efficiency requirements are not particularly stringent. Open-flame torches are used in the petrochemical industry to treat exhaust gases and can also be employed in temporary control scenarios.
Enclosed torches: These offer better control over the combustion process, lower noise levels, and reduced heat radiation, making them suitable for locations with high environmental and safety requirements.
Open biogas flares, with their simple structure, flexible deployment, and controllable costs, remain suitable for emergency venting and temporary treatment scenarios in biogas engineering. The international standard ISO 22580:2020 provides technical specifications for the design, manufacture, installation, and operation of biogas combustion flares.
